MISSION STATEMENT


Protecting UNCI MAKA (Mother Earth) by monitoring, observing, and certifying of Private and Commercial Pesticide Applicators that conduct business with the various businesses, schools, and other entities within the Exterior Boundaries of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.  Maintaining a balance between natural and man-made chemicals in the prevention of infestation and over-usage is the basis for the PROTECTION and PRESERVATION of UNCI MAKA (Mother Earth).



LOCATION


The OST Pesticide Enforcement Program is located within the Environmental Protection Program’s Building.  Office hours are from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm MDT.



WHAT IS THE PESTICIDE ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM?


The OST Pesticide Enforcement Program is a cooperative effort by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the OST to implement the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticides Act (FIFRA).in Indian Country.  FIFRA is the Federal Law that regulates pesticides and their use.



WHAT DOES THE TRIBAL INSPECTOR DO?


The Tribal Inspector is working within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to inspect pesticide uses within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation.  To ensure that products are used according to the labeled directions.  Inspections are conducted to ensure that the public’s health and the environment within the boundaries of the reservation are protected from pesticide misuse.



WHAT TYPE OF INSPECTION IS CONDUCTED?


Inspections will include:  Agricultural applications including Worker’s Protection Standards, marketplace, Non-Ag use including structural, pesticides in hospitals, clinics, schools, residences, and rodent control.  Other inspections: Certified Private and Commercial applicators, any other inspections according to FIFRA Regulations.
